What Are Limiting Beliefs And How Do You Stop Them Hindering Your Success?

Updated: Jul 21, 2019

Limiting beliefs seem to be the top reason for new entrepreneurs to struggle because mindset is usually more important than the initially realize. When I started out, I had so many issues with letting my own personal limiting beliefs hinder my success. When I finally educated myself on identifying and overcoming them, everything finally started to fall into place.

So What Is A Limiting Belief?

A limiting belief is something that you truly believe about yourself, your situation or your life that results in you leading a life that is below satisfactory to what you want. For example, they may make you blind to the thousands of opportunities constantly popping up or diminish all your confidence so you never take the leap and get outside your comfort zone (which is essential for personal growth).

You might be thinking that this isn't you... However, almost everyone suffers with limiting beliefs and most people struggle to identify them or seems to be in denial about having them. In order to get rid of them once and for all, you need to be aware they are there.

Is A Limiting Belief Really That Powerful?

Would you believe me if I told you that your current situation is a result of your beliefs instead of your beliefs resulting from situations you have experienced? Most people probably wouldn't... Unless you have read the book 'The Secret'.

Your mind and your thoughts determine how your life is going to play out whether you want it to or not. You are more in control then you actually realize. This is the basics of the 'Law of Attraction'.

That being said, you need to work on getting rid of these limiting beliefs holding you back in order for you to manifest your dream life.

Common Limiting Beliefs

Are you still not sure whether you have any? See if any of these sound similar to you...

  • Money is hard to come by.

  • I am not pretty enough for love.

  • Success is determined by luck.

  • I don't have the skills to be successful.

  • I could never get into a university that good.

  • I am always going to be stuck in this job. No one really likes their job anyway...

  • People aren't truly happy.

  • Men are always going to be unfaithful to me.

  • Relationships always end in heartbreak.

These are just a few common ones regarding love, success, money and relationships. I used to personally suffer from the limiting beliefs about money and success... Who was I to be a successful coach? I knew I had results to prove my success but yet I didn't feel capable. Now I have overcome that mindset, I have a truly successful coaching business helping bloggers and I have never been happier.

Limiting beliefs can be incredibly hard to identify because we don't want to admit that we have played a part in some of the worst times in our life. It's not a nice way to think sometimes. Because of this, we never make a conscious effort to change our beliefs since they are so solid inside our minds.

How Do You Actually Identify Your Limiting Beliefs?

So far this blog post, I feel like I have told you how bad they are and how we need to make a conscious change, yet I haven't touched on actually discovering what your own limiting beliefs are.

This part is probably the hardest...

The way that works best for me is to sit down and get to know my own thoughts in detail (for a lot of people this can be quite overwhelming). For a while, I felt undeserving of a successful business... I truly believed I wasn't capable. The same patterns kept unrolling and when I sat down and analysed them, I realized it all led back to the fact I felt I didn't deserve this lifestyle or I was incapable.

That limiting belief was holding me back from success and I didn't even realize.

I recommend getting yourself a journal and analyzing your thoughts every single day- whether you do it morning or night is completely your choice. Consider how your day has gone, how it has made you feel and made a conscious effort to start your day with the right mindset.

Now We Have Identified Them, How Can We Overcome Them?

If you have got this far, just know I am proud of you! You have overcome the hardest part and you are ready to make a change.

It's time to make a firm decision to change these beliefs and success will be knocking at your door in no time at all.

It's Time To Replace Them...

This is the most powerful step. You need to start to rewire your brand to think differently.

Affirmations are incredibly powerful and can help you do this but you need to make it a regular consistent routine for the best effects.

I find this pretty hard to explain so I am going to kick this off with an example...

'Money is hard to come by.'

This can be replaced with...

'Money flows easily into my life. Money is in abundance to me.'

I would then right this down at the start to every day to solidify it as true in my mind. Our thoughts are so powerful and their is so much research into showing how our thoughts can manifest into reality.

Throughout the day, if you find yourself thinking one of these limiting beliefs, stop a moment and change it. Say it out loud if you can! Retrain your brain to think for success.

Final Thoughts

When I work with my coaching clients, I always touch on the importance of mindset because I feel like we could put the best strategy in the world in place for them, but if they don't truly believe they are capable, they will be sub-consciously blocking the success from ever manifesting.

Take some time out of your day to think about your greatest challenges in life to start to uncover the beliefs causing it.
