Introduce yourself! Tell us a bit about you and where we can find you on social media too!
This question always throws me in interviews. I always forget everything about myself!
My name is Jennifer but everyone calls me Jenn (2 ‘n’s please!) I live in Ireland, I’m 24 and I love to blog! I read, write, sing, play guitar and spend time with loved ones. Becoming a little obsessed with photography as well! If you were to leave me in a cabin with pens, paper, a few novels, a camera & a shelf of books – I would be happy! Well, you’d have to leave me good food of course!
Why did you start blogging?
I wanted to write. I remember when I was 11 or 12, I had just finished reading a book and I sat there thinking about characters I would invent. I grabbed some paper and started writing. When I turned 14 I decided to turn to blogging. I’m not still using that blog (or the second or third or fourth one!) but I have kept it up.
Tell us about your niche and your blog
I speak often about not actually fitting into a niche! I blog about my life, things that interest me or things I come across. I class my blog as a Lifestyle Blog because that is what I talk about – Life!
What is the best thing about blogging for you?
I am blogging to make myself happy. That is the best thing for me. It is the one thing that I am not doing to please others!
What’s your favourite social media platform and why?
Instagram. I love looking at pictures and I could spend hours getting lost in learning about different things on it.
What would say to someone interested in blogging or just starting out?
If you are interested in blogging – start blogging! Definitely set up social media accounts that you can link to your blog. I made this mistake several times. You don’t have to have it all figured out straight away, I still don’t! But it comes with time and practice. Don’t be scared to ask for tips or advice. There are very few people out there that will begrudge you this.
What was the most challenging thing about being a blogger for you?
Most difficult… It would probably be a tie between motivation and having time. Some weeks I have the time but not motivation. Some weeks I have all the motivation in the world, but do you think I could find the time?!
What do you do when you aren’t working on your blog?
I work a full-time job and am also working on setting up my own business, so I am a pretty busy woman! I try and keep up with a social life. I go to the gym. I enjoy food and craft fairs. I enjoy reaching out to new people and helping where I can! I volunteer and am currently doing 2 online courses.
My blog comprises of: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Wordpress and Pinterest. So yeah… Busy!
Name a female blogger or business owner who inspires you and why.
@veronicascafe is run by a friend of mine – Veronica! She started out 4 years ago in a café called The Rose Café which she built up and designed herself. She has always had a love of food and baking and she just threw herself into her business.
One of the things that inspires me most about Veronica is how she doesn’t just stop. She doesn’t think: “okay, that’s my business up and running. I don’t need to learn anything else” She takes course after course, both online and cooking classes. No matter the day, or lack of motivation, she gets up and keeps going.
What advice would you have for women wanting to start their own business?
Think it through. Will this business be able to support you? Will it be able to support your family? Will you need other work to cover your bills? Will this take me away from my family too much? Will this take me away from life and enjoying my life?
All that said, starting your own business is amazing and fair play to anyone who takes it on. I have great respect for all entrepreneurs, especially women. Why? Because the stacks are already against women.
Anything else you want to add? Stories?
I don’t think so 😊 I just hope that anyone who is reading this finds the motivation/ inspiration that they are looking for.
You asked for stories… Aw man I probably have loads and none all at the same time. I have stopped and started blogging and vlogging for so many reasons.
I remember I had a vlog with my last blog and when I started working full time after college, a few of the men I worked with found it and relentlessly made fun of me for weeks until I just deleted it because it wasn’t worth the hassle. Not a positive story but I did live to regret it. I would be so much further along if I just didn’t let it get to me at the start.
Actually, another thing. Don’t let fear of feeling that you’re copying someone stop you from posting about things you are genuinely interested in. Obviously, don’t take work from someone else and try and pass it off as your own, that is not and never will be okay. And you aren’t going to get a good image from it.
If you want to promote a piece of work another blogger has done, do by all means! But tag them and give them FULL credit. However, say you like fashion but you know another fashion blogger in your area (either personally or through people) do not let that stop you. Post about what you want, pose the way you want to pose. Just don’t outright copy or steal.
I’ll leave you with one final story...
2016 I started my current blog.
2017 I went for some advice about setting up my own business.
2018 I started using social media more for my blog, promoted myself and went to enterprise meetings.
2019 I put my head down and started reaching my goals.
Everything takes time. It doesn’t happen overnight, and it will always require more work and effort than you ever gave it credit to. You’re going to get there, just put the time, effort and work in. And if it doesn’t and you want to walk away, do just that. This is about what makes you happy at the end of the day.
