Interview With Nele: Imposter Syndrome & Everything Travel

Introduce yourself! Tell us a bit about you and where we can find you on social media too!

Hi! I’m Nele (Nay-la), a 23 year old travel blogger from the Netherlands. I moved to the UK 5 years ago and just kinda stuck around.

After quitting my full-time copywriting job last month, I jumped into the deep and am trying to make my blog and my freelance writing my main gig!

You can find me over at or on twitter/instagram under @thenavigatio

Why did you start blogging?

My very first blog was launched back in 2008. It was a blogspot website filled with poorly written articles in broken English. But it’s where my passion for the English language and writing started!

I’ve had many websites spawn across the internet since then, but in 2017 I decided to take it a bit more serious! I purchased my domain and started The Navigatio - a budget travel + expat blog!

Tell us about your niche and your blog

When I started The Navigatio, it was a lifestyle & travel blog. But it slowly turned into an only travel related website. I share tips about places I visit, how to travel affordably (but comfortably, I’m not a fan of hostels!) and I share what life as an immigrant/expat is like in the UK!

What is the best thing about blogging for you?

I love that I get to combine my passion for writing, photography and travel in one little place on the internet that’s all mine! It’s really rewarding when people tell me the articles they’ve read on my blog were useful for their upcoming trips or that they really enjoyed reading through it!

The entire blogging community is also something that I find amazing about blogging. Most of them are super supportive and it’s good to know they’ve got my back.

What’s your favorite social media platform and why?

I adore twitter! Mainly because it’s super easy to interact with other bloggers and readers. I’ve completely gone off IG, because of the constant algorithm changes and I’m not on FB or YT a lot myself.

What would say to someone interested in blogging or just starting out?

I’d say, just give it a go! It’s always better to just start, you’ll learn along the way. There’s only so much research you can do about it.

Get a free wordpress blog and start writing! From there, you can grow :)

What was the most challenging thing about being a blogger for you?

One of my main struggles is imposter syndrome. That little voice in the back of your head telling you you’re not good enough. There are so many amazing travel bloggers out there, why do I think I - little Nele who only visited a few countries - could be one of them?? It’s something I find really difficult, but I’m dealing with it! It’s slowly getting better!

What do you do when you aren’t working on your blog?

When I’m not working on my blog or hanging out with friends, I love playing video games with my boyfriend or reading! I studied English and Creative Writing, so I’m a bit of a bookworm, even though I’ve not had enough time to read a lot lately!

Name a female blogger or business owner who inspires you and why.

There are so many amazing power women that inspire me! One travel blogger who’s blog I absolutely adore is Ellie Quinn. She’s super lovely and her blog is absolutely amazing!

What advice would you have for women wanting to start their own business?

I think the most important thing is to JUST START! It’s scary, it’s intimidating, but the only way to learn is to just do it. I remember I was planning way too much for The Navigatio, rather than just putting the website online.

It’s changed a lot since I first put the website online and I keep getting new ideas to monetize it and grow my audience, but it’s a learning curve.
