Being a business owner, blogger or #GIRLBOSS can be pretty tough sometimes. I know that deep down I am basically a workaholic! We all want to put in as much time as possible to see our businesses' grow, however, we should never sacrifice our health.
I am by no means a mental health expert or doctor. I am only speaking from experience and sharing a few ways that help me when I am suffering with my mental health. I know it can sometimes be hard to find advice on this, which is why I wanted to share what I have learnt.
None of these are going to be a magical cure for you, but if they do help in anyway I would love to know! Please remember that if you feel you are a danger to yourself, reach out for help immediately.
11 Ways To Improve Your Mental Well-Being:
1. Say No To A Draining Commitment
You should never feel guilty about this. It is absolutely ok to say no sometimes.
I know that sometimes we feel like we are too committed or we just 'should' go, yet it is more important to take care of ourselves. By saying no, you are giving yourself more time and energy to focus on the things in life that make you happy.
2. Go For A Walk
Partly, I am annoyed at myself for saying this. I used to get so frustrated when I was feeling really down and someone would pressure me to go on a walk and claim it would solve all my problems. That's just not true.
However, I do see where they were coming from.
Getting outside, preferably somewhere quiet with nature surrounding you, can be an incredible stress-reliever. You can even sit down on a bench somewhere and read a book, appreciate the fresh air and be at one with your thoughts. It might seem scary to be alone with your thoughts but it can actually help us come to terms with them.
How often do you go a whole day without social media?! By spending a whole day (or even a whole weekend) completely unplugged, you will find your mind is much clearer and you feel fresher.
I know this can seem scary if you run your business online like me. Maybe delegate the tasks to someone you trust and know that they can take care of any arising issues. This will help you fully relax and appreciate your time without social media and even without the internet, TV or electricity in general.
I feel like everyone says this, but there is a reason everyone does. It really is powerful.
I understand meditating can be tough. I actually struggle with it quite a lot sometimes. Yet, I now realize the benefits and honestly wish I started sooner.
When I am finding it quite hard, I just try and do one minute when I wake up. As you improve you can lengthen this, but one minute a day will still make so much difference to how you feel.
Sometimes, I use guided meditation - especially before I sleep. This helps me when my thoughts keep taking over and I start to struggle. You can easily find guided mediation on eBooks, Youtube and even spotify.
I love to journal. I feel like it has transformed my life and I finally realize the power of mindset.
Every morning, write down 3 things you are grateful for, 3 affirmations and also just get pen to paper and write all your thoughts down. This is a great way to feel happier and de-clutter your mind.
6. Remove Toxic People From Your Life
If a friend in need is struggling and it's bringing you down, this is an exception. Everyone should be there when their friends need them. However, if someone seems to be purposely bringing you down and being unsupportive, it might be time to remove them from your life.
If this is a close friend or family member, it may be pretty hard to do. You might feel guilty but you honestly shouldn't. You can always just reduce the amount you see this person to reduce you being exposed to the negativity if it really isn't feasible to cut them out completely.
7. Clean Up Your Diet
There are studies to suggest that a bad diet can affect your mood. You also may feel more tired and sluggish when eating a lot of junk food.
I am not saying to cut junk food completely out because that isn't sustainable and trust me, I do love a good piece of chocolate! Be flexible but keep everything in moderation. Try and focus on good food which is full of vitamins.
8. De-clutter & Tidy
When my house (especially my bedroom) is a mess, my mind feels like a mess. I started to feel more anxious and overwhelmed.
Something as simple as having a clear out, throwing some stuff away or giving it to charity and tidying it into drawers, can change my mindset. I start to feel more in control and set for a productive day.
I also find it 1000x easier to get out of bed in the morning when my bedroom is tidy!
9. Present Yourself Confidently
Put on some clothes you feel great in, walk standing tall with your shoulders back and radiate a huge smile. Not only will this trick your mind into feeling happier and more confident, it will also help the people around you to feel happier since you will be a ray of sunshine to them!
10. Stop Multitasking
Studies suggest that we can't actually multitask. We work much better by focusing on one task at a time and it is more efficient and productive.
When I am multitasking, I quickly feel overwhelmed because it feels like there is so much to do at once. I can reduce this anxiety by removing the amount of things I am trying to focus on. A good way to do this is by time blocking. Focus on one thing for 20 minutes, then focus on the other thing for 20 minutes.
I absolutely love yoga. It helps me be much more present in my life which makes me feel happier as a result. When we feel more present, we tend to feel less stressed. Check out the book, 'The Power Of Now' for more on this.
Sometimes I head to a yoga class, or sometimes I just do a 10 minute video at home depending on how my body feels. Even 10 minutes of yoga can benefit you so much.
